The Ruin Garden at Chanticleer, photo by Lisa Roper.

The Main Line is famous around the world, and has been since the early 1900's when it first became the summer playground of Philadelphia's richest families.   They built lavish estates that offered them a beautiful country setting, as well as easy access to the city.

Chanticleer is the last remaining Main Line Estate that is still open to the public.  It was the home of Christine and Adolph Rosengarten, Sr. who headed Rosengarten and Sons Pharmaceutical Company which would eventually become part of Merck & Company in the 1920s.

The house was completed in 1913, and Landscape architect Thomas Sears designed the terraces as extensions of the house. A 1924 addition converted the summer home into a year-round residence and the family moved here permanently.

It officially opens March 27th, preparing for spring with new plantings, trimmings, and sculptural additions.

Pictured at the top of the story is the Ruin Garden, but you'll also want to explore the Asian Woods, Pond Garden, Tennis Court Garden, Bell's Run Creek, the Cut Flower Garden, Teacup Garden, and the Orchard.
  • Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm
  • Adults (13 years and over) - $10.00
  • Children 12 years and under - Free
  • Season passes are available online at Chanticleer Garden
786 Church Road, Wayne, PA 19087

The stunning photo above was taken by Lisa Roper, a gardener and photographer for Chanticleer Garden.

The Community Arts Center of Wallingford is excited to announce their new Alluring Light Exhibit of Chanticleer Garden Photos by Lisa Roper that opens March 16th in their Duke Gallery.

Eric Hsu took this photo of Lisa while she was taking photos amid a sea of beautiful flowers in Chanticleer Garden.

Lisa is both a skilled gardener and photographer with Chanticleer Gardens, located on the Main Line in Radnor Township.  The Exhibit photos can not be used here, but Lisa chose some other photos for us to use, and graciously wrote a few notes and descriptions to accompany them:

Tennis Court April 20, 2011 8:00 am. I wanted to highlight the profusion of hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis “Blue Festival’) and grape hyacinth ( Muscari armeniacum) planted in the  walls of the steps leading to the Tennis Court Garden. I purposely composed the photo so that the walls of the steps made a diagonal line across the image which creates energy in the composition.

Orchard chairs May 5, 2013 5:20 pm. I used the red maple leaves like a scrim to frame the chairs, blooming crab apples and drifts of narcissus in the Orchard.

Elevated Walkway May 16, 2017, 7:20 am.  Allium hollandaicum ‘Purple Sensation’ was in peak bloom and I wanted to capture the way the flow of allium echoed the sinuous lines of the Elevated Walkway.

View from towards Chanticleer December 10, 2013 4pm. The last place the light hits before the sun sets is Chanticleer House and the top of the hill. I wanted to catch that moment when only part of the garden was lit up.

A path winds its way toward the Orchard April 20, 2014 6:11 pm. A path leading into an image creates a sense of mystery, I was also captivated by the light in the cherry (Prunus ‘Accolade’ ) on the Orchard.

Pink peony May 9, 2017 6:15 pm. For this portrait of a tree peony I focused on the stamens covered in pollen using a very shallow depth of field. The soft, bright but overcast light makes for perfect conditions to describe all the details of the petals.

NOTE: The Alluring Light Exhibit will be on display through April 12th, but don't miss the opening "Meet & Greet" Reception on Sunday, March 17th from 2-4 pm,  where you will have an opportunity to ask questions and share your thoughts with Lisa.

Irish or not, we all wear green, celebrate the plucky leprechaun, drink green ale and tell tall tales.  We're willing to kiss a stone...sing an olde Irish song (after many mugs of the green ale) and in general, have a heck of a time.
As you can see...We take Wearing of the Green very seriously!
FUN FACT:  "The Wearing of the Green" is actually an Irish street
ballad lamenting the repression of supporters of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

Aren’t you tired of being cooped up in the house all these months?  Grab the kids, don your winter coats (like the sheep above), and spend a brisk March day at the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation!  Closed for the winter, it officially opens Saturday, March 30th from 11 am to 3 pm.

The fact is, Spring arrived this month, whether it feels like or not!  And the Colonial Plantation is already springing to life with hoeing, raking and tilling of the fields, not to mention the arrival of some new farm animal babies!

Spend a few hours with their costumed Colonial interpreters -- visit with your favorite animals – tour the historic buildings and learn amazing Colonial crafts and skills!  Experience life as it was in the 18th century, before electricity, plumbing, and texting.

After all that history, it seems wrong somehow to end this story by sending you to a website for more information...but that's the 21st Century for you! :)
