The physical centerpiece of Christmas for most families, is the tree... and more than 5000 people find it at Linvilla Orchards and Christmasland.

Whether your family hops a wagon and heads out to the tree fields to cut down your own (like the Delco family pictured above), or whether you browse the gorgeous pre-cut firs at their Christmasland Garden Center, no one leaves disappointed!

Picking out and cutting down your own tree is a great family event that starts in mittens and boots and ends
with everyone sitting around the living room admiring your choice!  Linvilla photo:

To cut your own tree, Linvilla has a fabulous family package that starts by loading the gang in
a wagon and heading for the fields...

Linvilla provides a saw, and then hauls the tree back for you, wraps it up and can even tie it to your car all at one set price of $59.99 plus tax.

Tree Cutting Days and Times:
  • Every Mon - Fri: 10 am - 5 pm (the last wagon departs promptly at 4pm)
  • Sat - Sun: 9 am - 5 pm (the last wagon departs promptly at 4pm)
  • The majority of their 'cutting' trees are 6' - 10' Douglas Fir and Canaan Fir
  • Register early and receive 10% OFF your tree -- and they can drill your tree for "Stand Straight" Christmas tree stands. The staff will even shake the loose needles, put a fresh cut on your tree, tie your tree up and tie it to your car.
Or shop for your tree indoors, where Christmasland features one of the region's best selections of pre-cut trees...

The Garden Center morphs into a picturesque wonderland of timeless decorations, unique gifts and displays that are sure to leave you in awe. You'll find hand-made wreaths, freshly cut trees, roping, wreaths and all the trimmings. Pre-cut trees range from $40 to $200, depending on size and type.

Each year the Brandywine River Museum of Art presents an imaginative salute to the season..."A Brandywine Christmas."

From trees decked-out in playful hand-crafted 'critters' to their hugely popular train exhibit and their rare collection of antique dolls, an afternoon here is one of the best holiday gifts you can give yourself and your family.

Youngsters like those pictured are fascinated by the trains, which for adults, carry us back in time to when we were young and our parents brought us to this special place of art and history.

This year's Brandywine Christmas story is told through decorations and the legendary artworks of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth.

Thousands of whimsical Critters (ornaments and decorations handcrafted by Brandywine volunteers from natural materials) are displayed on towering trees soaring up through the museum's three-story atrium. A Santa ornament is pictured left.

Like many people, Christmas is when I miss mom and dad the most. And I can't resist the chance to share a childhood memory that relates to the next story...

When I was little, and mom had my baby sister - she couldn't hold my hand as easily when crossing streets or traversing busy sidewalks.  She insisted I hold on to her skirt, which fortunately in the 60's, were big, round, and full with lots of material to grab on to. And she NEVER moved a step if she didn't feel my little hand clutching her skirt.

When a brother came along, you guessed it.  My sister and I both became skirt-clutchers.

When HE could finally walk, there were 3 of us...all grabbing on for dear life because without a baby to carry, mom walked a whole lot faster than before!

Year's later, I was allowed to let go and walk beside her on my own. And I was an adult before Mom told me she cried each time one of us was old enough to walk on our own.  She missed the feeling of having us 'attached' to her.

If you're missing some attached time with your children, Ice Skating can be a wonderful contact sport.

Under the guise of teaching them to glide, stop, and even twirl a little - there WILL be hugging, catching, pushing, lifting up, falling down and a lot of laughing.

And if your child is actually the best skater in the family? Guess they'll have to hold on to you -- like I once held on to mom's skirt :)

So grab your skates and glide over to IceWorks, one of the finest ice complexes in the country.
They host Olympic qualifying competitions, top hockey tournaments and many Olympic figure skaters have used it as a practice and training facility.

Spend an hour or so on the ice...toss in a little hot chocolate, and spend a perfect afternoon or evening with your children.
Public Skating Schedule
Every M-F, Noon to 1:30pm -- Fri & Sat Nights: 7:30 to 9:30
Sat & Sun afternoons: 2 to 4pm

•Skate Rentals: $2.00 **      ** Wednesday FREE Skate Rentals
•Walker Rentals: $4.00

Pictured just above is one of many Vintage Holiday exhibits at the National Christmas Center.

National Christmas Center Founder, Curator and Historian, Jim Morrison says with a smile, "I created this place to celebrate Christmas, and you wouldn't believe how many people actually cry when they tour some of our nostalgic family exhibits...or walk through our replica of a F.W. Woolworth 5 and 10 store..."

People so often say "This is where the magic happens!" --- but they're wrong.  Because THIS PLACE is where the magic truly happens. Even the The Travel Channel ranked it #2 of the top 6 "Christmasiest Places in the World"...

So hop on the time machine and head for the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country.  The  museum is less than an hour's drive from the center of Delaware County -- but worlds away!
Every Thursday through Sunday in December, your kids can visit with Santa himself in one of the world's most nostalgic and lavish settings.

Marvel at Santa's North Pole, Workshop, and Reindeer Barn! Discover gift givers from foreign lands and learn of their unique customs and traditions.

You'll be blown away by other exhibits like the Antique Emporium, Vintage Christmas, Toyland Train Mountain, the Art of the Nativity, to name just a few.

Experience Christmas the way our parents and grandparents did in the 1950's -- there's even a Woolworth's 5 and 10 Cent Store! (pictured below)

Enjoy self-guided, walk-through tours of these life-sized exhibits from the past, each celebrating the magic, memories, history and traditions of Christmas.

And then it comes down to food...a tasty, bakery-baked and pre-assembled cookie house - plus lots of gum drops, sprinkles and frosting to decorate with...and I can take it home and eat it? Nirvana!

The Wayne Art Center is hosting 2 Family Gingerbread House Workshops on December 3rd - one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

This could be the most fun (and tastiest) holiday family activity you could ever do!

Gingerbread houses are a Christmas icon...and those families participating in the workshop will receive their own large cookie cottage (freshly baked and pre-assembled by Clay's Corner Bakery) plus the icing and candy to decorate it.

But at the end of the day, this is sticky-fingered fun spent with those you love, transforming these edible elements into a holiday treasure!

All materials are included, but feel free to bring your own decorations to make each house uniquely yours!

Have a history buff in your family? Here are some very cool events offering an authentic look back at some of the nation's earliest Christmas celebrations.

And we start with a tree-trimming event that takes place in the oldest building in Pennsylvania...

December 4th's Trim a Swedish Christmas Tree Party, is presented by The Friends of the Swedish Cabin in Upper Darby from 2 to 4pm.
The Swedish Cabin is the oldest building in Pennsylvania...and pictured
above, is an old photo, showing side buildings and a covered porch.
Pictured at the bottom is a recent shot of the historic site.
The cabin was built between 1638 and 1655,
though the exact year is not known.

Along the banks of the Darby Creek, within earshot of the noise and bustle of the 21st century, stands a piece of America's past.

The Swedish style log cabin was over 100 years old at the time of the American Revolution. The cabin is believed to be built by early Swedish settlers, and to have been part of the New Sweden colony.

The annual Tree--Trimming event is the perfect way to add an historic note to your holiday season.

Sit by our fireplace, enjoying Swedish treats while helping trim the tree with Swedish Christmas ornaments, Julgran, with apples, heart baskets and straw ornaments.

Sample Swedish foods and shop at the Butiken (the shop).  You can also stroll along the Darby Creek and through the woods while eating marshmallows, toasted over the bonfire.

Admission is FREE. For more event information, call 610-449-3577.

This year marks the 24th time that The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future have taken up residence at Hedgerow Theatre in December.

For hundreds of families throughout the region,

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a must-do holiday tradition.

Dickens’ tale of the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserable, selfish miser whose heart is transformed after he is visited by a series of spirits on Christmas Eve is faithfully adapted by the theatre's Artistic Director, Jared Reed.

"We love bringing together our entire Hedgerow Community – professional actors, families, the whole Delaware Valley – and sharing in this uplifting tale year after year. Dickens’ is an amazing storyteller, and he gets what we as people feel and experience, as well as understands that sometimes we fall down before we rise to where we need to be."

Reed also noted that each year they look at what themes resonate and find a way to present it.

"This year, we are having a core company of professionals supported by a ‘roving choir’ along  with over 50 young actors from the community under the age of 18 to play the Cratchitts and all the young people in Dickens’ story," Reed explains.

The Media Theatre is also deeply rooted in holiday tradition performing both family productions and children's plays like Winnie-The-Pooh Christmas Tail.

For families, A Christmas Story is the holiday classic about the boy who wants nothing more than a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas and his dad who wins that incredible leg lamp, pictured above! This family show is a humorous and upbeat story about who you have around you–not what you have surrounding you.

A Christmas Story is a rousing musical for the entire family!  Photo:

In  Winnie-The- Pooh Christmas Tail a very special Friend-and-Relation tells Christopher Robin a story of a Christmas Eve very long ago (about last year) when Eeyore, the old gray donkey who lives by himself in the thistle corner of Hundred-Acre Wood, was absolutely miserable. It seems that he lost his tail and Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet got all of their friends and a search was organized. There is a great deal of fun and excitement, plus delightful songs, in the adventure that follows.

Before starting this story, I called Fieri's Philly Kitchen & Bar, and was told they had just started taking reservations for New Year's Eve...but I doubt these seats are going to last very long. Everybody loves BUZZ - and Fieri's new restaurant is a hive of chatter.

"Flavortown" and "Chester, Pa." in the same sentence?  That's happening in November as Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives' TV showman Guy Fieri opens Guy Fieri’s Philly Kitchen & Bar at Harrah’s casino.
You can almost picture the Camaro pulling off of I-95. The Harrah's folks promise "robust, bold-flavored dishes and signature, over-the-top culinary creations" such as a bacon mac-and-cheese burger. Fieri also will serve a smoked cheesesteak and roast pork & broccoli rabe sandwich with Italian sweet peppers. Bar will be stocked with wines, spirits, and 16-plus craft beers."

Flavor-town looks pretty darn good from here! Mmmm-mmm ....

  • Unique twists on traditional dishes.
  • Open daily for lunch, dinner and late-night dining
  • Casual foods, including burgers, (like the one pictured above!) wings, tacos, small bites and shareable food items.
  • A diverse beverage selection including a California influenced wine list, a creative collection of signature cocktails, and craft beers.
  • Fieri co-owns six restaurants in California and is also a TV game show host, author and personality.
